Fourteen students from Government Titumir College have begun a hunger strike at the secretariat, demanding the formation of a commission to convert the college into a university. At the same time, students have resumed protests by blocking the road in front of the college gate in the city’s Mohakhali. This has led to traffic halt on the road from the Amtali intersection to Gulshan-1.

Students have long been demanding the conversion of their college into a university and the formation of the Titumir University Commission. They have protested multiple times in the past by blocking roads to highlight their demands.

Continuing this movement, they staged a blockade on Monday from 11am to 4pm as per their prior announcement. Meanwhile, a delegation of students went to the secretariat to meet with government advisers to discuss their demands.

Earlier, several people including children were injured in an attack on a train when the students of Titumir College blocked rail tracks at Mohakhali in the capital on Monday demanding their college to be transformed into a university.

Railway OC Joynul said four Dhaka-bound trains and another train that was set to leave Dhaka remained stranded since the students put up barricades on the rail tracks in the morning.

He said Kamalapur-bound Parabat Express train came under attack in Mohakhali around 11:30am on Monday, leaving some people including children injured.

He, however, could provide the exact number of the injured.

The students also attacked the Dhaka-bound Upakul Express train coming from Noakhali, leaving some window glasses of the train damaged, he said.
