Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin has urged the international community, including the French government, to support a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis, focusing on addressing the root causes of the issue.

His appeal came during a meeting with Christian Lechervy, France’s Special Envoy to Burma (Myanmar), at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday afternoon.

In the meeting, Uddin emphasized the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing crisis, expressing Bangladesh’s frustration over the lack of progress in repatriating the Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

He pointed out that despite efforts, little has been done to facilitate the return of the more than one million Rohingya refugees currently living in Bangladesh after fleeing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

The Foreign Secretary also raised serious concerns about the ongoing armed conflicts in Myanmar, especially in the Rakhine region, which have led to further displacement and increased tensions along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

He noted that new waves of refugees had entered Bangladesh in recent months, further straining the resources of host communities.

“Bangladesh is already burdened with the challenge of hosting over a million displaced Myanmar nationals. The situation is further aggravated by dwindling international humanitarian support, which threatens to exacerbate the already fragile conditions faced by both the Rohingya and the local population,” Uddin stated.
