Dhirendra Chandra Debnath Shambhu, former Member of Parliament for the Barguna-1 constituency, Abdul Matin, the personal assistant (PA) to Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and Mohammad Sirajul Islam Molla, a former Member of Parliament (MP) from Narsingdi-3 have been arrested by police in connection with multiple student murder cases.
Dhirendra Chandra Debnath Shambhu was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police on Monday night (November 11) in Uttara, Dhaka.
On Sunday, November 10, at approximately 2 AM, Abdul Matin was apprehended during a police raid at a house in Shakhta Union, Char Washpur village in Keraniganj, located on the outskirts of Dhaka. According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Keraniganj Model Police Station, Sohrab Al Hossain, Matin had been on the run since August 5, following the government’s ouster, and was involved in the murder of university student Riyaz in a case related to Esphani University. Matin is currently in police custody and legal proceedings are underway.
On Monday, November 11, Sirajul Islam Molla was arrested from the capital’s Dhanmondi area. Molla faces multiple charges in connection with the murder of students during the anti-discrimination student movement.
He had previously served as a Member of Parliament for Narsingdi and holds significant influence within the local Awami League leadership.
In a separate development, three additional Awami League figures were arrested by the Khilgaon police on Monday in connection with the murder of 23-year-old Syed Najmul Hasan, a victim in the anti-discrimination student protests.
The arrested individuals include Mohammad Babul, also known as “Kasai Babul” (54), a member of Khilgaon 2nd Ward Awami League, Mohammad Azizul Haque Mukul (49), general secretary of the Shantipur Union Awami League, and Fahad Ullah (40), former president of Paltan Chhatra League.
The arrests come amid growing concerns over violence during the student protests, which have been marked by clashes between students and political activists. The police are continuing their investigation into the killings and have promised to take strict legal action against all those involved.
These developments mark a significant turn in the ongoing investigation into the series of student murders linked to political violence in Bangladesh. The authorities have vowed to continue their efforts to bring justice to the victims and their families.
