Under the leadership of President Ziaur Rahman, Bangladesh carved out a new identity in the realm of international politics, marking a significant chapter in our national life. His visionary outlook and principled stance opened new horizons for diplomatic relations. The great slogan, “Friendship with all, enmity with none,” was not just a policy but a commitment he embodied to uphold the sovereignty and independence of Bangladesh.
During Shaheed Zia’s tenure, the scope of international relations expanded significantly. His leadership ushered in a new era of friendships and cooperation, bringing Bangladesh a glorious recognition on the world stage. The diplomatic advancements during this period ignited a new dream for our nation, safeguarding our self-esteem and sovereignty. Even today, his vision inspires us to move forward together based on friendship and cooperation.
In establishing relations with the outside world, Shaheed Zia realized that: 1. Strong ties with India are essential, but these must be based on mutual sovereignty, not on dominance or subjugation.
2. To stabilize relations with India, it is crucial to bind regional states through a golden thread of cooperation, encompassing not just political aspects but also economic, cultural, intellectual, and information exchange.
3. Just like the small fish, the Pabda, Bangladesh must not only be strong but also agile in its progress.
President Ziaur Rahman revolutionized Bangladesh’s foreign economy. He introduced luxury cars into the country, allowing the people of Bangladesh to become familiar with high-end automobiles. This development not only showcased the changing economic landscape but also symbolized a new era of modernization and progress for the nation. Ziaur Rahman ushered Bangladesh into a new era of friendly relations with neighboring countries. He has initiated the historic export of manpower to the Middle East and other Muslim countries. His leadership marked a transformative era for Bangladesh, particularly through his deepening relationships with the Arab and Muslim world, most notably with Saudi Arabia. His efforts not only facilitated the establishment of a Bangladeshi workforce in the international labour market but also revolutionized the economy, allowing our youths to earn from abroad, thus enhancing the nation’s dignity and identity.
Shaheed Zia’s diplomatic acumen was exemplified by his gift of Neem tree saplings to the Saudi government, symbolizing a bridge of friendship; his words during a meeting with King Khalid bin Abdul Aziz—”What is lacking in your country is abundant in mine”—set a new course for cooperation. This initiative transcended mere political strategy; it reflected a humanitarian resolve to connect with the Muslim world, emphasizing that peace can be achieved through dialogue rather than conflict. Under his guidance, the export of Bangladeshi labor flourished, showcasing the skills and resilience of our workers, which not only brought economic growth but also elevated Bangladesh’s reputation globally.
Ziaur Rahman’s unique efforts for peace and cooperation worldwide are indeed commendable. By having Bangladesh elected to the United Nations Security Council for the first time, he elevated the country’s status and renewed our national confidence. His strong leadership also facilitated the establishment of SAARC, opening a new chapter of cooperation among South Asian countries. This initiative proves that through coordinated efforts and mutual cooperation, we can solidify our standing.
On November 4, 1979, when Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 66 Americans hostage, a shadow of panic and concern spread across the globe. In this tense situation, President Ziaur Rahman’s leadership demonstrated that courage and determination are essential to overcome the depths of crisis. The release of 52 hostages in January 1981, resulting from international negotiations, was not just a political resolution; it marked a proud chapter in our nation’s history.
Despite being the president of a small country like Bangladesh, Shaheed Zia showed no fear or hesitation in working alongside major global powers, especially with the western world. He swiftly engaged with the Western world, particularly in the context of Afghanistan, where the PDPA seized power in 1978 under Nur Muhammad Taraki, who began an aggressive communist campaign that destroyed Islamic values and executed around 27,000 political prisoners to quell dissent. In response to widespread rebellion, the Soviet government deployed its 40th Army to Afghanistan on December 24, 1979. President Ziaur Rahman openly criticized the Soviet government and played a key role in fostering consensus among the leaders of 34 Muslim countries regarding the withdrawal of Soviet troops. He also urged the Western world to take effective action in resolving the crisis, showcasing his diplomatic acumen.
U.S. President Jimmy Carter greatly admired Shaheed Zia for his liberal, progressive, and democratic outlook, establishing him as a bridge between the Western and Muslim worlds. Following the Iranian revolution, a global oil crisis emerged, and Shaheed Zia began special negotiations to lower oil prices, leveraging his friendly relations with OPEC member countries. He raised this issue in a United Nations Security Council session, reassuring President Carter. In 1980, during discussions between Carter and President Zia regarding the release of hostages held by Iranian terrorists and the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, President Zia’s contributions were clearly evident.
Shaheed Zia has made an outstanding contribution in establishing world peace. In Bangladesh’s history, President Ziaur Rahman’s visit to Cuba represents an unforgettable chapter, not merely a state visit but the ultimate symbol of our national dignity. In 1979, at the invitation of Fidel Castro, this courageous move was a selfless effort to establish world peace and human rights, where he called for equality above national interests. Every word he uttered was a testament to Bangladesh’s pride; under his leadership, our diplomacy flowed into a new dimension, presenting Bangladesh as a state of peace to the world. Even today, when we recall this bold step, it awakens a new hope and inspiration within us—a dream of an independent, prosperous, and respected nation, guiding our path and forever engraved in the annals of history.
The contributions of Shaheed Zia still illuminate our path today, inspiring our journey forward. We must embrace the responsibility of realizing the dream he envisioned, for we owe an eternal gratitude for his immense toil and sacrifice. President Ziaur Rahman reminds us of how, through cooperation and solidarity, we can establish ourselves in the international community, even amidst hardships. His noble teachings ignite an everlasting flame in our hearts, uniting us and propelling us toward a proud nation.
