Sylhet Bureau :

The students of the statistics department of Sylhet’s Murarichand (MC) College formed a human chain to demand the resolution of the teacher crisis.
On Thursday morning, a rally started from the statistics department and went around the entire college before reaching the main gate of the college. Later they presented a memorandum to the principal of the college.
Fourth year student of Statistics department Sirajul Islam Shakib moderated fourth year Jayita Vanik, Ashish Sen, Kavya Ojha, Kulsum Akhtar, third year Taharia Yamin Orthi, first year Pabel Mia and others spoke.
The students said that statistics department is a traditional department. Now about 20 number batch is going to finish honors. But in that case we have only one teacher.
Which is not desirable at all. Only 4 teacher posts against about 6 to 700 students. We don’t expect that either. There are 12 to 13 teachers in other departments.
There is only one teacher in statistics. Statistics is one subject where it is impossible to study without a teacher.
There is no teacher recruitment in statistics and no system for recruitment as such. Because of our lack of teachers, the results are constantly being disrupted.
Due to which we could not come to the list of best by our good results. But, we know we have enough capability. We want to read and we want to be taught by our teacher. We really don’t expect such a messy department.
Hope the authorities concerned will step in and solve the teacher crisis very soon. Since now Bangladesh is new, independent Bangladesh, we also want to work with the new department.
According to statistics department sources, 1 associate professor, 1 assistant professor and 2 lecturer posts have been created in the statistics department. But, from the last 3 and a half years, all the work of the department starting from teaching activities is going on under only one associate professor in the statistics department. Currently, there are about a thousand undergraduate, masters, secondary and degree students in the Department of Statistics.
Professor Abul Anam, Principal of MC College. Riaz said, statistics is a very important thing. Since no new teachers are appointed here, teaching has to be continued with only one teacher.
It is not possible to run a department with just one teacher. Repeated memorandums and letters have been sent to the Ministry for the appointment of teachers in this department.
An application was made to the senior secretary last week as well. Here we strongly demand to create and appoint new teacher posts along with posting of teachers.
