In a remarkable turn of events, former President Donald Trump has secured a victory in the 2024 US Presidential Election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in a hard-fought contest that captivated audiences worldwide.
Ahead of the election, Trump encouraged voters on X, stating, “Your vote will lead us to greatness. Your vote will unleash a new golden age! Your vote will make America great again! Greater than ever before! Vote Trump!”
With the election results now clear, leaders and governments across the globe have extended their congratulations, acknowledging the scale of Trump’s win and its implications for global geopolitics.
Notably, Russia has yet to issue a congratulatory message, while China expressed willingness to continue working with the US on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was quick to congratulate Trump, lauding “his impressive election victory.” He recalled a productive meeting with Trump in September, where they discussed the Ukraine-US strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ending Russian aggression.
“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can bring a just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful we will put it into action together,” Zelenskyy shared on social media.
Leaders from regions facing ongoing conflicts, including the Middle East and Europe, also highlighted the vital role the US will play in upholding global security. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the first to congratulate Trump, posting: “Congratulations on history’s greatest comeback! Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America. This is a huge victory!”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended a warm message on X, writing, “As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability, and prosperity.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated Trump on his “historic election victory,” noting, “As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy, and enterprise.” On his X handle, he added, “I look forward to working with you in the years ahead. From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic.”
European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, also congratulated Trump while expressing intentions to protect European interests amid potential shifts in US policy. Macron posted, “Congratulations, President Donald Trump. Ready to work together as we did for four years.
With respect and ambition, for more peace and prosperity.” He later noted a conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about defending Europe’s interests and values. Scholz, in a statement on X, reiterated Germany’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with the US, adding, “We can achieve much more working together than against each other.”
In the Middle East, Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended their congratulations to Trump, underscoring the importance of Saudi-US ties. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan echoed similar sentiments, congratulating his “friend Donald Trump” and expressing hopes for strengthened US-Turkey relations. Erdogan stated, “I believe that more efforts will be made for a fairer world. I hope the elections will be auspicious for the friendly and allied people of the US and all humanity.”
South Korea’s presidential office expressed its commitment to building a “perfect” security partnership with the new US administration.
