Commuters in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday had to endure severe traffic congestion as vehicular movements on different roads almost came to a standstill as thousands of people from across the country gathered at an Islamic conference at Suhrawardy Udyan.

The rally, organized by Olema-Mashaekh at 9am, witnessed a large turnout of madrasa students and teachers from various districts of the country.

There was extreme traffic congestion in the Dhaka University campus area after 10:00 am. Visiting around the campus, acute traffic congestion was noticed on the surrounding streets.

And, there was the crowd of people who came to attend the rally around TSC of Dhaka University and Raju Memorial Sculpture.

The Suhrawardy Udyan and the surrounding areas had been filled with followers of the Islamist groups.

Different vehicles carrying participants of Tuesday’s programme were seen moving on different streets of the capital right from the morning.

Many participants were seen moving towards the site of the rally by feet also. Even the Metro Rail was crowded by people attending the rally.

Many travelled by bus from outside Dhaka, and the vehicles have been parked on the roads.

Afzal, a bus driver from Gabtoli, described the extent of the delays, saying, “It took me an hour to get from Asad Avenue to Bangla Motor, whereas this route usually takes only 20 minutes.”

A senior official from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that a large number of vehicles have entered Dhaka from outside the city and are parked at various locations, which has led to traffic congestion spreading throughout the city.
