Manikganj Correspondent :
Due to submergence at Arichaghat point on Aricha-Kazirhat sea route, ferry movement has been disrupted. Due to this, the ferry service is closed for about 22 hours from 9 pm on Friday until the report is written on Saturday. BIWTA is carrying out dredging operations on an urgent basis at sensitive points. However, as the water level is receding, it takes a long time to remove the silt as divers have stepped on the 13 km long route.
The concerned officials said that the dredging activities started on this route from the 17th of last June. Dredging is going on at Kanaidia, Mollar Char on the waterway from Aricha to Kazirhat. BIWTA Dredging Unit has its own 9 dredgers deployed.
Khairul Islam, the driver waiting to cross, said that the truck carrying sea fish from Chittagong arrived at ArichaGhat around 5 am on Friday. After a long wait, the ferry could not cross even on Saturday afternoon. Two other fish trucks with him returned to Chittagong without being able to cross. He too will wait a little longer. He said that if it is not passed in time, the sea fish will rot.
Another driver Nazmul said that he has been waiting for the crossing since night. You are wasting money on eating and sleeping because you are sitting on the ghat. As he could not reach the destination, he has to bear the financial loss.
Due to sitting for an uncertain time, one has to suffer physical and mental problems.
