Workers from a garment factory in city’s Kachukhet area took to the streets with various demands on Thursday morning. During the protest, some workers threw bricks and stones at law enforcement officers.
At the time, two RMG workers shot and several others injured during protests in the Kachukhet area of Mirpur in the capital on Thursday.
The injured workers have been identified as Al Amin, 17, and Jhuma Akter, 15, both are employees of San Tex Fashion Garments in the area.
According to locals, the violence broke out after a sudden closure of a local garment factory prompted the protests, along with workers from neighbouring factories joining in.
During the protest, workers reportedly threw bricks chips at law enforcers, and at one point, set fire to a military vehicle and a police van.
Police reportedly hurled tear gas shells and fired shots to disperse the protesters.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Police Outpost Inspector Md Faruk Hossain confirmed the matter to the median saying that injured Jhuma received treatment for a gunshot wound to her right leg and was later discharged and Al Amin remains in surgery for a bullet wound to his back.
Meanwhile, during the protest, the protesters vandalized and set fire to two vehicles belonging to police and the army.
In response, police and army personnel took action to disperse them, said Kafrul Police Station officer-in-charge Kazi Golam Mostafa.
