The Tigers will face uphill task as South Africa piled up a mammoth total of 308 in the first innings against Bangladesh on the second day play of the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the capital’s Mirpur, on Tuesday.

Earlier, Bangladesh scored 106 in the first innings on the first day (Monday).
Bangladesh were at the stumps at 101 for the loss of three wickets.
The hosts trailed by 101 runs from the Proteas.

Bangladesh had an unhappy start in their second innings as opener Shadman Islam (1) was caught at the short leg by Tony de Zorzi off Kagiso Rabada when the hosts’ total was just four.

One-down Mominul Haque (0) was caught at the third slip by Wiaan Mulder off Rabada when Bangladesh’s total was four for the loss of two wickets.

Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy and second-down Najmul Hossain Shanto repaired the damage contributing together 55 runs for the third wicket partnership before Shanto (23) was trapped leg before wicket by Keshav Maharaj when the Tigers’ score was 59 for the loss of three wickets.

Mahmudul Hasan and third-down Mushfiqur Rahim fought back adding together 42 runs in the unbroken fourth wicket stand before the bails were drawn for the second day due to bad light.

Mahmudul Hasan was on 38, while Mushfiqur Rahim was on 31 before the two umpires drew the bails.
Rabada bagged two wickets instead of 10 runs, while Maharaj took one wicket for 33 runs.

South Africa resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 140 for the loss of six wickets.
Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 18 and 17 runs respectively.

Verreynne and Mulder put on together 67 runs more in the seventh wicket stand before Mulder was caught at the slip by Shadman Islam off pacer Hasan Mahmud when the Proteas’ score was 227 for the loss of seven wickets.
Mulder knocked a painstaking 54. His 112-ball innings was belted with eight fours.

Hasan Mahmud struck again as eventh-down Keshav Maharaj (0) was bowled out by the pacer when South Africa’s total was 227 for the loss of eight wickets.

Right-arm spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck as Dane Piedt (32) was trapped leg before wicket by Miraz when the touring side’s score was 293 for the loss of nine wickets.

Verreynne was stumped out by Litton Das off Miraz when the Proteas’ innings came to an end.
Verreynne notched up a terrific 114. He hit eight fours and two sixes in his 144-ball knock. It was Verreynne’s second century in his Test campaign.

Hasan Mahmud grabbed three wickets in the space of 66 runs, while Miraz bagged two wickets at the cost of 63 runs.
