DU Correspondent :

A group of students of the country’s northern region, including Rangpur district, have asked the government to implement the Teesta Master Plan immediately to save the people from the seasonal flood and becoming waterlogged every year.

Besides, they also demanded to include at least one adviser in the interim government body from the people of the northern region.

The students made this demand in a demonstration held at the foot of Anti-terrorism Raju monument of Dhaka University on Saturday.

Asking for the betterment and well-being of the people of that region, the students stated that the people of the northern region gave their blood first in the liberation war of 1971 and mass uprising of 2024 which inspired the nation to protest against injustice but in the question of development and justice, they are being deprived day by day.

The other demands are to allocate a proper share for the people of the north in the national fiscal budget, provide them with special economic aid and install gas lines and build a special economic zone and industrialize the region.

“Advisers have been appointed from various regions and districts as representatives of the current government. But no adviser has been appointed from the Rangpur division,” Bin Yamin Mollah, Central President of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad, said adding “The age-old problems of neglected North Bengal must be solved.”

Demanding the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan at the earliest, Nahid Alam, a student of Dhaka College, said, “We, the Rangpur residents, have been victims of floods for years.

We have been demanding the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan for a long time.

But the fascist Hasina did not listen to any of our demands. She did not even provide the minimum budget for the development of our department.”
