Hundreds of readymade garment factory workers staged demonstrations in front of the factory in Zirani area of Gazipur city on Monday noon pressing various demands, including a hike in attendance bonus.
Protesting workers also took position on the Chandra-Nabinagar road, bringing a halt to vehicular movement on both sides of the road.
According to industry police sources, the workers of clothing factory Redial International Limited in the Zirani area demonstrated last week seeking various demands, including a rise in attendance bonus.
At that time, factory owners assured the workers of meeting their demands. As no initiative has been taken to implement those so far, workers stage demonstration in front of the factory during lunch break yesterday.
The demonstration stopped vehicular movement on the road in the Zirani Bazar area and caused long tailbacks on both sides of the road, bringing misery to passengers.
Abdul Momin, a worker of the factory, said, “The factory authorities have not yet implemented the workers’ demands despite the announcement last week. This time workers will protest until they meet the demands. The factory owners are not keeping their word despite making repeated assurances.”
Gazipur industrial zone’s assistant police superintendent of police Abu Taleb said workers started demonstrating around 1:00pm pressing various demands and took position on the Chandra-Nabinagar road later. They were trying to resolve the issues through talking to workers.
