Sultan Mansur, who had been living abroad for several years, had reportedly been traveling between the UK, USA, and Canada. Family sources indicated that he had left Bangladesh well before recent political developments. Despite his detention, no formal charges or cases have been lodged against him at this time.

Once a prominent figure in the Awami League, Sultan Mansur found himself politically sidelined in 2007 after being labeled a “reformist” during the state of emergency. He later joined the Gono Forum, led by Dr. Kamal Hossain, and became a key member of its presidium.

In the 2018 general election, he successfully contested the Moulvibazar-2 constituency under the Jatiya Oikyafront, a coalition of Gono Forum and BNP. He ran using BNP’s paddy sheaf symbol and secured a victory in the opposition alliance.
