Practically Sheikh Hasina has been in power since 1996 with a break between 2001 and 2009.

Sheikh Hasina again was reelected in a controversial election in 2009 as has been reflected in the statement of late Mahbub Talukder, a member of the election commission who was reported to have said the election was a failure while DR.Kamal Hossain, a former Foreign minister of Late sheikh Mujibur Rahman is reported to have said to hold election again and While distinguished Professor of Political scientist at Illinois state University Ali Riaz discounted the result. In fact Mr Ali Riaz was practically was Bangladeshi. Therefore,Sheikh Hasina was elected Prime Minister illegally.

A huge protest demonstration by the Students all over Bangladesh since July 1st in 2024 brought down the illegal government of Sheikh Hasin on 5 August and left Bangladesh and fled to New Delhi by helicopter to take shelter. As of now, Sheikh Hasina remains in New Delhi.Since her diplomatic passport appeared to have been cancelled by the Foreign ministry of Bangladesh therefore sheikh Hasina remained as a fugitive practically in India. As this writer understands Sheikh Hasina would likely face as many as 51 cases as and when returned to Bangladesh.Bangladesh and India signed an extradition treaty which would permit Sheikh Hasina to face trial for crimes committed by Sheikh Hasina.

This writer thinks that students in Bangladesh in particular would be delighted to see the trial of Sheikh Hasina who committed crimes against humanity.
