The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested former State Minister for Water Resources, Colonel (Retd) Zahid Faruk Shamim, from Dhaka’s Baridhara area on Sunday evening.

RAB’s Media and Legal Wing Director, Lt Col Munim Ferdous, confirmed the arrest, stating, “We rounded up Zahid Faruk from Baridhara in the evening.”

According to Lt Col Ferdous, Faruk was wanted in connection with several murder cases tied to the violence that erupted during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The former state minister has been handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of police for further investigation.

Faruk’s arrest follows a wave of political upheaval that culminated in the resignation and subsequent departure of Sheikh Hasina from her position as Prime Minister on 5th August amidst a student-led mass uprising.

Since the downfall of the former government, at least 33 individuals, including former ministers, members of parliament, advisers, and top-level leaders of the Awami League, have been arrested, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
