In Ishwardi, farmers have started ginger cultivation on fallow land in the hope of low cost and high income. In this, the interest in ginger cultivation in more or less sacks is increasing in the upazila. About 20,000 sacks of ginger are being cultivated in the upazila. Ginger cultivation in sacks is increasing day by day.
It can be seen on the surface, the farmer Abdul Jalil and Fatema couple of Saraikandi area of the upazila cultivated 1200 sacks of ginger on their fallow land. Rows of ginger plants adorn each bag. Abdul Jalil said, I cultivated 1200 sacks of ginger in my fallow place. Ginger costs much more than other crops. Can be produced at low cost. Each bag will cost approximately Tk 40-50 from planting to harvesting. He is hoping to sell ginger worth about three lakh taka from 1200 sacks.
Fatema said, besides family work, I am helping my husband in ginger cultivation in various ways. There is a plan to grow ginger in sacks on a larger scale in the future with the cooperation of the Agriculture Department.
Sources from the local agriculture extension department said that there is no need for separate land for ginger cultivation in sacks. Cultivation is done in this way in many homes. Again there is no fear of crop loss due to heavy rains or floods. After one crop is harvested, another crop can be grown separately without any fertilizer. The cost is also relatively low.
In this method, on the one hand, the attack of soil-borne diseases is greatly reduced, on the other hand, in case of natural disasters, the sacks can be moved to another place. It can be placed anywhere in the yard, wall or free space around the house or on the roof. It does not require any separate land or care.
The agriculture department also said that ginger can be cultivated in this way even in shaded areas. Generally no crops are cultivated under bamboo plantations. As a result, the space remains empty. Ginger can be grown in bags in that bamboo garden very easily.
