Mohila Samiti condemns gang-rape of girl on running bus

Bangladesh Mohila Samiti, a rights organization, has expressed deep concern and grief over the gang-rape rape of a young girl on a bus in the Shah Amanat Bridge area of Chittagong recently.

In a media statement on Thursday, the organization said quoting media reports that the girl boarded a minibus from Badamtoli area to go to her home.

When everyone else got down from the bus in the Maijjartek area, the girl became the lone passenger in the vehicle. Later when the bus came into the bridge area, she was raped multiple times allegedly by bus driver Azad Khan and his assistant Shahedul Islam.

Later, the girl was left in the Shantirhat area of Patia by the rapists.
The organization said it has noticed women and girls being subjected to gang-rape and harassment inside vehicles and on their way to different destinations.

The organization thinks that such incidents are hindering women’s and girls’ freedom of movement in society and hampering their normal lives.
Mohila Samiti demanded that the authorities should ensure accountability on the part of the owners and other stakeholders of the transportation sector in such cases.

It also requested the administration and the interim government to stop the recurrence of such incidents on women and girls in society. At the same time, it urged everyone to wage a movement so that such incidents are not repeated in society.
