The government on Tuesday approved separate proposals for procuring 25,000 tons of rock phosphate and 40,000 tons of MOP (Muriate of Potash) fertiliser to meet the increasing demand in the country.
These approvals were granted during the third meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase, which was held at the Finance Division Conference Room at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, the adviser to the interim government on the Ministries of Finance and Commerce.
Following the meeting, Dr Salehuddin informed reporters that the Ministry of Industries had proposed the procurement of 25,000 tons of rock phosphate for the TSP Complex Limited (TSPCL).
In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture had put forward a proposal to procure 40,000 tons of MOP fertiliser from the Canadian Commercial Corporation under the fifth lot for the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).
When questioned about the country’s power and energy situation, Dr Salehuddin emphasised that the government does not delay proposals related to power and energy. He noted that the procurement of LNG (liquefied natural gas), along with fertiliser and pesticides, is crucial, stating, “Those proposals are now being cleared quickly by the Economic Affairs Committee and Purchase Committee, no matter what the constraints are.”
Regarding when the power and energy situation might return to normal, the finance adviser suggested that this question should be directed to the adviser responsible for those sectors.
