The general students of Chittagong University (CU) staged a sit-in program demanding the appointment of a vice-chancellor. They gave a two-days ultimatum to the interim government.
On Sunday (September 8) at 10 a.m., the students held a sit-in program at the university’s central Shaheed Minar premises.
Russell Ahmed, the central coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, said, “We forced the VC of the university to resign after the fall of dictator Sheikh Hasina.”
Since then, the educational activities of the university have been closed. As a result, students are going to study in session. So we are doing this position program. Urge the local government to appoint VCs in universities as soon as possible. Then the university will return to normal.
He further said, we want a VC who will be education friendly, student friendly and researcher. We want a VC who will look after the students, share their happiness and sorrows and make our university world class. We gave a two-day ultimatum. If the VC is not appointed within this period, we will take a strict stand.
Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi, central co-coordinator of anti-discrimination student movement, said that class-examinations are closed in the university due to absence of VC. Hall seats are not being allotted. That is why we are demanding the appointment of a vice-chancellor as soon as possible.
If the vice-chancellor is not appointed in the meantime, we will go on a strict agitation.
Earlier, after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the popular coup, in the face of students’ cannons, the vice-chancellor of Chittagong University, Professor Dr. Abu Taher resigned resigned on August 12 last.
As a result, one of the most autonomous universities in the country has been running without a vice-chancellor for a month.
