In a significant political development, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the Speaker of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament), tendered her resignation on Monday.

A gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs confirmed the resignation later in the evening.

According to the notification, Dr. Chaudhury submitted her resignation to the President of Bangladesh, Mohammed Shahabuddin, in a letter citing Section 74 (2) (Gha) of the Constitution.

The President formally received the resignation letter today, and it took effect immediately upon receipt.

Dr. Chaudhury’s resignation represents the latest in a series of major political upheavals in Bangladesh.

Her departure comes on the heels of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dramatic resignation and subsequent flight from the country on 5 August 2024, amid widespread protests and civil unrest.

The following day, on 6 August, President Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament, effectively ending the current government’s tenure.

In light of these events, an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has taken office.

This interim administration is expected to manage the country’s affairs until stability is restored and new elections can be held.

Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been a prominent figure in Bangladeshi politics, serving as the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad since 30 April 2013.

Her uninterrupted tenure of over a decade made her one of the longest-serving Speakers in the nation’s history.
