The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will take strict measures against any of its members found involved in extortion activities, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced on Saturday.

He emphasized that the party has no tolerance for such behavior and urged the public to report any BNP members attempting to extort money.

“If anyone tries to extort money in the name of the BNP, please hand them over to the police.

The BNP has no connection with extortionists,” Fakhrul stated while distributing relief to flood victims in Choto Sharifpur, Cumilla’s Lalmai upazila.

Fakhrul expressed concern over recent news reports alleging BNP members’ involvement in extortion, which he said had damaged the party’s image.

He reiterated that the BNP is not associated with these unlawful activities.

He also warned against efforts to create divisions within the party following the victory achieved through the recent student-led mass uprising.

Fakhrul emphasized the importance of unity and vigilance during this time.

Discussing the ongoing dialogue with the interim government, Fakhrul noted that ensuring a fair election environment was a priority.

He called for patience, allowing the new government time to address these concerns. Fakhrul also reflected on the BNP’s long struggle to restore democracy, marked by years of false charges and violent attacks.

He expressed optimism that if a fair election is held and the people vote the BNP into power, the party’s internal problems will be resolved.
