Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, announced that the nation’s student and public unity has successfully overthrown the autocratic regime, leading to the establishment of the current interim government.
He emphasized that it was not any political party, but the collective efforts of the people that brought this government into power.
Speaking as the chief guest at a gathering organized by the Combined Professional Council at the Engineers Institute of Bangladesh in the capital on Friday, Dr. Rahman stated that Jamaat is prepared to give the interim government the necessary time to conduct a fair election.
He criticized the previous autocratic government, claiming it had destroyed almost all state institutions and attempted to eliminate opposition political parties, including Jamaat. “They ruined the electoral system, but in response, the people entrusted the current government with the responsibility of repairing the damaged institutions and creating an environment for a fair election. We are ready to give them the time they need,” he said.
However, Dr. Rahman warned that the ultimate victory is yet to be achieved. “We still have a long way to go. The skies of Bengal are not yet free from vultures. Therefore, students and the public must remain united and prepared for the challenges ahead.”
He further noted that the government’s attempt to ban Jamaat was a ploy to derail the student and public movement. “We did not fall into their trap. We remained patient and sought Allah’s help. Allah has returned our political rights to us, something we did not imagine just a month ago,” he added.
Expressing gratitude towards the students, Dr. Rahman said, “We will be forever grateful to the students who saved this nation. Now, you must focus on building yourselves. This is not the final sacrifice; it is just the beginning. You need to return to your educational institutions, continue gaining knowledge and skills, and maintain integrity while encouraging others to do the same.”
In his presidential address, Mohammad Selim Uddin, Ameer of Dhaka Metropolitan North Unit Jamaat, remarked that those who try to discredit the revolution under the guise of demands are allies of the fallen autocrats. “This government will ensure voting rights through state reform, leading to a government chosen by the people. We will present our demands to that government. But before that, let us give the interim government the chance to prepare for the election through necessary reforms, instead of occupying roads in the name of protest,” he concluded.
