The government has annulled the judicial inquiry commission that was established to investigate the violence and fatalities during the recent mass student protests. The decision, announced by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday, is effective immediately.
The commission, initially formed under the recently ousted Awami League regime, was led by Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman. It was set up on July 16 in response to student demands following the deaths of six people and widespread violence between July 16 and 21. The original mandate allowed the commission 30 working days to complete its investigation.
On August 1, the commission was expanded to include two additional members and given a revised deadline of 45 working days, in accordance with the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1956.
The cancellation of the inquiry commission comes 23 days after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India amidst the student-led movement. The move to cancel the commission marks a significant shift in the government’s approach to addressing the unrest and violence that erupted during the protests.
