In a significant escalation of legal challenges confronting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, five additional murder cases have been lodged against her, several former ministers, and police officials in Dhaka and Rajshahi.
These cases, arising from recent mass protests and violent incidents, have intensified the political tension gripping Bangladesh. Of the five cases, four have been filed in Dhaka and one in Rajshahi.
The first case involves Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League (AL), and 48 other individuals, who face accusations related to the death of Dulal alias Selim. The victim was reportedly killed in the Jatrabari area during a mass protest on 3rd August.
The complaint was filed by Dulal’s brother, Mostafa Kamal, with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saddam Hossain. The case implicates high-profile figures including former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader, and former AL lawmakers Shamim Osman and Ramesh Chandra.
The magistrate has instructed the officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station to register the case as a First Information Report (FIR).
In the second case, Hasina and 21 others are accused of involvement in the killing of Mansur Miah, a machine operator at the Buriganga Filling Station in Basila, Mohammadpur. The incident occurred on 19th July.
