A woman named Parvati Sarkar (50) filed a complaint with the police station after being pressured to pay interest in Bhangura upazila of Pabna. Parvati Sarkar is wife of Bimal Kumar Sarkar, a resident of Kalibari Shahpara Mohalla, Bhangura Municipality of the upazila.
According to the complaint, two years ago, ParbatiSarkar borrowed three lakh taka from Sirajal Islam of Kumradanga Mohalla for her son’s education expenses. Later Parbati Sarkar was asked to pay the amount by fixing monthly installments of Tk.30,000. In this way, she is said to have paid four lakh and twenty thousand taka. However, Sirajul Islam demanded another five lakh taka and created pressure in various ways including fear to pay the sum. Parvaati Sarkar first tried to commit suicide without seeing any other way. Later, on the advice of local people, she filed a complaint against Sirajul at the police station.
Sumon Ahmed and Sabbir Hossain of Kalibari Mohalla said, Sirajul Islam is basically a usury merchant.
