US senator to arrive in Dhaka to meet Yunus

US Senate Dick Durbin is expected to visit Bangladesh on August 26 to have meeting with the Chief Advisor to the interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus. Dick Durbin is an old friend of Dr. Yunus.

This visit will mark the first time a high-ranking US politician has traveled to Bangladesh since the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5 and the formation of the interim government.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during his visit to Dhaka, Durbin will meet with interim government’s Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

He will also hold meetings with Foreign Affairs Advisor Tauhid Hossain and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.

It is anticipated that during his visit, Durbin will convey messages regarding the future relations between the two countries, reflecting on the bilateral relationship in the context of the interim government.

Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Springfield, is the 47th US Senator from Illinois and serves as a senior senator and the leader of the bipartisan Congressional delegation.

As the Senate Majority Whip, he holds the second highest position among Senate Democrats.

Durbin has been serving in this role since 2005, with the support of
Democratic colleagues every two years.

He chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee and also serves on the Appropriations and Agriculture Committees.

Durbin was first elected to the U.S. Senate on November 5, 1996, and was reelected in 2002, 2008, 2014, and 2020.

He assumed his role following the retirement of his long-time friend and mentor, Senator Paul Simon.
