Rickshaw pullers staged a demonstration on Saturday demanding a ban on auto-rickshaws on the main roads, gathering with their rickshaws in the Dhaka University (DU) area.
From there, they moved towards Shahbagh in front of the museum and continued their protest.
During the protest, they chanted various slogans such as “Auto-rickshaws won’t be allowed, won’t be allowed,” “Illegal auto-rickshaws won’t be tolerated,” and “We reject discrimination in Bangladesh.”
Zahurul Islam, one of the rickshaw pullers, said: “Previously, auto-rickshaws weren’t allowed on the main roads, so we used to get some fares. Now, auto-rickshaws operate everywhere, and no one says anything.
We don’t get any fares. If we don’t earn fares, how will we survive? How will we support our families?”
“Our demand is to reinstate the previous rule where auto-rickshaws weren’t allowed on the main roads. Otherwise, we will starve to death,” he added.
After spending some time at Shahbagh, over a hundred rickshaw pullers proceeded towards the Dhaka University area through Katabon and Nilkhet.
