Former captain of Bangladesh National Cricket team and former chief selector of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Faruque Ahmed has been elected as the new president of BCB.
The board meeting of the BCB was held at Secretariat in the capital on Wednesday and the election for the president of the BCB was held on the same day. Former BCB supremo Nazmul Hassan Papon resigned from his post virtually when the board meeting was held on the same day.
Earlier, chairman of the Cricket Operations Committee of the BCB and director of the BCB Jalal Yunus and director of the BCB Ahmed Sazzadul Alam Bobby resigned from their posts. Jalal Yunus and Bobby were not elected by the elections of the BCB.
They were included by the quota of the National Cricket Council (NSC). As they submitted their resignation to NSC, Mentor of the cricketers of Bangladesh Najmul Abadin Fahim and Faruque Ahmed have been included as the directors of the BCB to fulfill the vacant posts. It may be mentioned that Faruque Ahmed was a councillor of the BCB. President of the BCB Nazmul Hassan Papon fled from the country after prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled from the country due to students’ and peoples’ revolution on August 5.
Adviser to Ministry of Youth and Sports Asif Mahmud proposed to Faruque Ahmed to take the post of BCB boss.
After starting of Faruque Ahmed’s term, Nazmul Hassan Papon’s above one era kingdom came to an end.
Former captain of Bangladesh National Cricket team Faruque Ahmed had a colourful career as a cricketer and also as a captain. Though he could play only seven international matches as Bangladesh got the Test status in 2000. But he had played at least 15 years in domestic cricket competitions and he had a golden career.
Faruque Ahmed played in the 1999 World Cup wearing the jersey of Bangladesh National Cricket team last of his international cricketer.
He led the Tigers in the 1993 ICC trophy as a captain. After his playing career, he was a successful chief selector and served for the BCB for a long time.
After becoming the president of BCB Faruque Ahmed said, ” I have big target. My first target is to take Bangladesh Cricket team in a good position. It is big matter to do that. We want to bring Bangladesh Cricket team in better position.”
