Lieutenant General (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Choudhury, the Home and Agriculture Adviser, has identified the improvement of law and order as the main challenge currently facing the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Speaking to journalists on Monday at his office in the Secretariat, the Adviser stressed the urgency of tackling the issue.
“Our main challenge at the Ministry of Home Affairs is law and order. The goal is to improve the situation as quickly as possible,” Jahangir Alam emphasised.
Earlier in the day, the Home Adviser met with United Nations Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis to discuss potential international support.
“The discussion primarily focused on what kind of assistance and cooperation they can provide us in tackling this situation.
We also discussed the areas where we are seeking support,” the Adviser noted.
A significant part of the discussion centred around the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
The Adviser acknowledged the burden of hosting over 1.2 million Rohingyas, with their population growing daily.
“They are assisting with the Rohingyas, and we have requested further assistance.
The costs are increasing, and we are struggling to bear these expenses,” he said.
Jahangir Alam also revealed that a UN fact-finding mission is expected to visit Bangladesh soon to assess the situation and determine the necessary support.
“Discussions were held on what kind of cooperation they will offer and what kind of support we need. The mission might arrive next week,” he added.
