BNP leader Zainul Abedin Farroque has filed a lawsuit against former Detective Branch (DB) chief Harun-Or-Rashid and another official, Biplob Kumar, for their alleged involvement in assaulting him during a hartal programme in 2011.

The case was lodged with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Monday afternoon. Farroque’s complaint accuses the police of beating him with sticks and kicking him with boots with the intent to kill.

On 6 July 2011, Farroque, who was then the opposition chief whip, was leading a procession towards Farmgate during a BNP-called strike when he came under attack.

The assault took place in front of the parliament building following a verbal altercation. Harun and Biplob, along with their forces, reportedly attacked Farroque, causing him head injuries, loss of consciousness, and damage to his ligaments and left kidney.

Farroque alleged that after the incident, BNP lawmaker Ashraf Uddin Nizam attempted to file a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station but was barred by police officers.

Subsequently, when the case was filed in court, it was dismissed within three days of investigation. Furthermore, the police filed a case against Farroque, and he is still attending hearings related to it. The plaintiff claims that Harun-Or-Rashid, then additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of the Tejgaon Division and now additional commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and Biplob Kumar Sarkar, then assistant commissioner (AC) and now joint commissioner of the DMP, along with their subordinates, obstructed the procession.

Following the incident, Harun-Or-Rashid was promoted to deputy commissioner for the Lalbagh zone and was awarded the President Police Medal (PPM) in 2013 for his role in the assault on Farroque.
