AKM Shahid Uddin, the deputy managing director of Dhaka Wasa, has been appointed as the new managing director (MD) of the organization. He assumed his new role on Thursday.
It is noteworthy that on Wednesday, Dhaka Wasa’s former MD, Taqsem A Khan, resigned citing health reasons.
Taqsem A Khan was first appointed as MD of Wasa in 2009, and his tenure was extended several times.
Most recently, in August, 2023, he was reappointed to the position for the seventh time, for another three years.
Over the past 15 years, Taqsem A Khan held significant power within Dhaka Wasa.
Despite facing various allegations of corruption and irregularities, his long-term retention in the position raised questions.
The Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry issued a notification in this regard.
Taqsem was first appointed as the MD of the WASA in October 2009 and his tenure was extended seven times thanks to the prolong stay of Sheikh Hasina-led government in the state power.
Since he took charge, the price of water in Dhaka Wasa has been increased 16 times.
Earlier, Dhaka Wasa Managing Director Taqsem A Khan’s contractual appointment has been cancelled. The Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry issued a notification in this regard on Thursday.
Dhaka Wasa will start process to appoint new MD within the possible shortest time and until then the senior most deputy managing director will perform duties of the MD, said the notification.
Taqsem was appointed Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) managing director in October, 2009 and his tenure was extended for seven times.
His tenure was last extended on October 14,2023 for three years.
