Staff Reporter :

The interim government is set to announce veteran economist Ahsan H Mansur as the 13th governor of the central bank.

To facilitate his appointment, the government will need to amend the Bangladesh Bank Act.

A senior official of the finance ministry told to the journalists that the current law does not allow anyone over the age of 67 to hold the position of governor.

Therefore, the law needs to be amended to appoint Mansur, who is nearly 73 years old.
If the chief adviser agrees to lift the age limit for governor appointments, the proposal will be sent to the president.

If the president approves, it will be issued as an ordinance.
Earlier, in 2020, the law was amended to extend the age limit for governors from 65 to 67 years when former governor Fazle Kabir was reappointed.

Mansur, the executive director of the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh think tank, has previously worked for organisations like the International Monetary Fund, or IMF, and BRAC Bank.

He also worked as a consultant for the government to create policies on public-private partnership projects.
Mansur studied economics at Dhaka University and began his career there as a lecturer.

He later pursued his postgraduate studies at McMaster University and earned a PhD from Western Ontario University.
