BD reaffirms commitment to Geneva Conventions

On the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions, Bangladesh has renewed its commitment to upholding International Humanitarian Law as outlined in the four Geneva Conventions and their two additional protocols.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized this in a statement issued on Monday, underscoring the nation’s dedication to these global humanitarian principles.

The Geneva Conventions, established in 1949, serve as a cornerstone of international humanitarian efforts, outlining the responsibilities of nations in times of armed conflict to protect civilians, prisoners of war, and those who are hors de combat (out of the fight).

“Bangladesh remains vocal about grave breaches of International Humanitarian Law anywhere in the world and will continue to take a principled position against mass atrocity crimes committed under any circumstances,” the ministry’s statement declared.

Bangladesh’s commitment to these principles has been further demonstrated through the recent mass uprising led by students and the general public, which the ministry described as a testament to the nation’s unwavering adherence to the ideals of International Humanitarian Law.

The statement also reflected Bangladesh’s proactive stance on the global stage, particularly in addressing violations of humanitarian law, ensuring accountability, and advocating for the protection of human rights.
