Commissioners Shaikh Shamsuddin Ahmed and Dr Rumana Islam – of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) – resigned on Monday citing personal reasons.
They sent their resignation letters to the official concerned at the finance ministry, confirmed Financial Institutions Division Secretary Abdur Rahman. BSEC chairman Prof Shibli Rubayat-Ul Islam had previously resigned on Saturday night.
On August 5, the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government fell. The BSEC chairman’s resignation came five days later.
Last Sunday evening, the finance ministry had issued an order that BSEC Commissioner Mohsin Chowdhury will perform routine duties as the acting chairman of BSEC until the interim order is given.
As a result, three of the five members of the BSEC commission resigned.
On May 8, Shaikh Shamsuddin Ahmed was re-appointed for the second term as commissioner of BSEC for four years. Rumana Islam of the Dhaka University Law Department was appointed as the first female commissioner in BSEC on May 8, 2022.
They were appointed for four years.
Besides, the BESC has cancelled the order to remove floor prices of Beximco and some other stocks after the resignation of its chairman, who had signed an order to remove floor prices without any discussion in the commission’s regular meetings. Shibli was appointed the BSEC chairman on May 17, 2020. His tenure expired on May 16 of this year. In April, the government reappointed him for four more years.
