Farmers in Faridpur’s Madhukhali Upazila are busy collecting saplings from various markets. The Department of Agriculture Extension expects to exceed the target of planting saplings this year in 11 unions and one municipality of the upazila compared to last season.
Madhukhali Sadar and Kamarkhali haat, the two biggest haats of the upazila, have seedlings, but there is no crowd of farmers. On Monday, farmers are buying a load of seedlings at Madhukhali market from Tk 350 to Tk 500. And the owner of the hut is collecting the rent at 20 rupees per load.
Jamirul Sheikh, a seedling seller at Madhukhali market, said that the importation of saplings in the market is also extensive. Even though there are imports, buyers are less than that. Jute cutting has been delayed due to less rain in this area this season. As there is still jute in many lands, the farmers have slowly planted saplings and are planting rice seedlings by cutting the jute of some land and keeping the jute in heaps. Md. in the market lease collection. Yusuf Fakir said, import of fodder is extensive in this season. But the buyer is less than that. The quality of those who are coming with seedlings this time is very good.
Madhukhali Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Mahabub Elahi said that Ropa Aman’s Biri-87, 37, 75, Bina-7, and several varieties of rice seedlings are usually planted from July to mid-September. Due to less rain, many will plant late this time. Ropa Aman seedlings can be planted during September (Bhadra month).
This year, the target of plantation in one municipality and 11 unions in the upazila is 8 thousand 710 hectares of land. Which was 8 thousand 690 hectares last year. When the buyer wanted to know about the low attendance, he said that many people have built seedbeds. As a result, the seedlings are fewer buyers this year. More buyers are expected to come in towards the end.
