Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, OSP, NDC, NCC, PSC assumed charge as Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) on 11-08-2024. He succeeds outgoing Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail, OSP, NUP, PPM, PSC. Before joining the Chawak Chairmanship, he was serving as the Commander of BN Fleet.
Rear Admiral S.M. Moniruzzaman was born in Kushtia district. He passed his higher secondary with distinction from Comilla Cadet College in 1987. After joining the Bangladesh Navy as an officer cadet in 1988, he was commissioned in the executive branch in 1990. During his career, he has successfully served in various operational assignments at national and international level. During his long and versatile career, he served in various positions in various ships, institutions and naval headquarters of the Bangladesh Navy. As his career in the Navy progressed, he commanded various front line ships, including the flagship BNS Bangabandhu of the Bangladesh Navy.
He also commanded the Bangladesh Navy’s Western Flotilla as Pioneer Commander Flotilla West. He served as Director Personnel Services (DPS), Director Blue Economy (Ad Hoc) and Director Naval Training (DNT) at the Naval Headquarters.
He was successful as Managing Director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, Managing Director of DEW Limited, DGMIS of Army Welfare Organization, and Chief Staff Officer of Commander Chittagong Naval Region. He has participated in several professional courses in the country and abroad in his illustrious career.
He is a graduate of German Naval Academy (Crew VI/89) (Marineschule Murik), PN Communication School (Pakistan), Turkish Armed Forces War College (Harp Akademileri) and US Naval Command College. An alumnus of Defense Services Command and Staff College and National Defense College Mirpur, Rear Admiral Moniruzzaman has received two Masters and Diploma degrees from Turkey and USA respectively.
He played an outstanding role in the process of disarmament of the three main rebel groups to hold fair and credible national elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the auspices of the United Nations. After participating in the Multinational Peacekeeping Command Post Exercise (GARUDASHIELD) in Indonesia in 2009, she joined the Fleet Commanders’ Conference in Australia in 2019 as the lead ComFloat West.
He attended the 8th IONS Conclave of Chiefs 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand and the Pacific Amphibious Leaders Symposium held in Bali, Indonesia as the head of the delegation. Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman was awarded the Outstanding Service Medal (OSP) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to COMFLOT. He completed 12 years of sea service with credit. He is fluent in Turkish, German, French and English. Leadership is his interest as a reading enthusiast.
