Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Maksud Kamal and the provosts of seven residential halls have resigned following a student-led protest rally held on Friday.

The provosts who stepped down are from Rokeya Hall, Shamsun Nahar Hall, Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Bangabandhu Hall, Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, and Salimullah Muslim Hall.

The resignations come in response to intense student demonstrations demanding significant administrative changes at the university.

On Friday, a group of students organized a two-point rally, calling for the resignation of not only the Vice-Chancellor but also the proctor,
assistant proctor, treasurer, all hall provosts, and members of the university’s senate and syndicate.

The protesters accused the administration of failing to address various issues affecting students.

Professor ASM Maksud Kamal had been serving as the 29th Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University since November 4, 2023, succeeding former Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman.

The university community is now awaiting further developments as the search for new leadership begins.
