Dr Yunus visits Abu Sayeed’s home

Interim government's Chief Adviser Nobel Laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus visited the house of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur killed in police firing during the students' quota reform movement, to console his parents. He also offered prayers at the grave of Abu Sayeed in Rangpur's Pirganj upazila on Saturday.

Nobel Laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government, visited the home of Shaheed Abu Sayeed in Babanpur village, Pirganj upazila, Rangpur, on Saturday to offer his condolences to the bereaved family.

Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur (BRUR), was tragically killed in police firing during the student quota reform movement.

Dr Yunus paid his respects at Sayeed’s grave and spent time speaking with his family. He also presented the family with a national flag as a symbol of honour and respect.

The visit was accompanied by Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Adviser Md Nahid Islam and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan.

Upon his return to Dhaka from France on Thursday, Dr Yunus reflected on Abu Sayeed’s sacrifice, expressing deep emotion.

“At this moment, I am remembering Abu Sayeed, whose image is etched in the memory of every Bangladeshi. Nobody can forget it.

What an incredibly brave young man he was! He stood in front of guns, and since then, no young man or woman has given up.

They have moved forward and said, ‘shoot as much as you can. We are here,'” Dr Yunus remarked.

Abu Sayeed was a key coordinator of the student quota reform movement for civil service jobs at BRUR. As an English Department student, he led protests with courage and determination.

He was killed in police firing on 16 July and was buried in Pirganj upazila the following day.
