The Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has claimed that the recent attacks on Hindu homes in Sylhet, which occurred following the fall of the Awami League (AL) government, exclusively targeted Awami League leaders rather than ordinary Hindus.
According to a top leader of the Sylhet district branch of the council, who requested anonymity, “To the best of my knowledge, no ordinary Hindu has been affected in Sylhet. All those impacted are leaders of the Awami League.”
The unrest began on the afternoon of 5 August, when rumours of attacks on various temples in Sylhet started circulating. However, no verifiable incidents of such attacks have been confirmed.
Despite this, the anxiety caused by reports of attacks on Hindus across the country has led to heightened panic among the Hindu community in Sylhet. As a result, many Hindu-owned businesses have remained closed since 5 August, according to our correspondent on the ground.
In response to the situation, various political parties, including the BNP, as well as general students, are actively working to ensure the security of Hindu temples and homes. Efforts include raising awareness about the safety of Hindu communities and visiting temples to provide reassurance to Hindu religious leaders.
