BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed strong confidence on Thursday that Professor Muhammad Yunus will successfully restore democracy in Bangladesh.
Speaking to the press while visiting injured students at Nitor Hospital in the capital, Alamgir stated, “We are hopeful that Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus will succeed in leading the interim government. Dr Yunus has been nominated by both the students and our party. We have entrusted him with this responsibility on behalf of the entire nation, and we believe he will fulfil it.”
Fakrul praised Yunus’s leadership capabilities, stating, “Dr Yunus will be successful. He has the capability in leadership and will be able to address issues related to law and order.”
He highlighted that the root of the country’s problems is a lack of democracy and emphasised, “Restoring democracy will be a key task for the interim government.” He further added, “The sooner democracy is restored, the more likely the interim government will succeed.”
In response to queries about the BNP’s expectations from the interim government, Fakhrul outlined three key priorities including the restoration of law and order, the return to a democratic government through elections, and measures to keep the economy functional.
Additionally, Fakhrul issued a statement urging party members to remain vigilant against miscreants who might attack or plunder property under the guise of BNP affiliation.
“If anyone attacks or plunders property using the name of the BNP, they will face strict consequences. Party leaders and activists should be alert to such activities,” the statement read.
In a separate statement, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi instructed party members not to admit new individuals into the BNP at this time. He emphasised that all units of the party and its affiliated organisations should adhere strictly to this directive.
Rizvi also announced that the BNP will hold special prayers and supplications in mosques across the country for the eternal peace of the martyrs who lost their lives in the recent anti-discrimination movement, as well as for the swift recovery of all injured students and individuals.
