Tax collection has been significantly disrupted due to ongoing unrest among officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
For the past two days, NBR officials have staged demonstrations to press for various demands, including structural reforms within the tax administration. This unrest has hampered normal operations and raised concerns about the efficiency of tax collection.
The officials argue that implementing a new vision for Bangladesh, as envisioned by the younger generation, hinges on robust revenue generation. However, they contend that the current weak administrative structure poses a substantial challenge. They are calling for comprehensive reforms to enhance the effectiveness of the tax system.
The officials have also expressed the need for the revenue board chairman to be appointed from within the board, citing that experienced members are better equipped to handle the technical aspects of tax collection.
Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, NBR officials have demanded the resignation of Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem and other alleged corrupt officials. They accuse these individuals of involvement in widespread irregularities, including intimidation, flawed hiring practices, transfer and promotion issues, withholding of retirement benefits, and support for illegal activities such as smuggling.
On Thursday, officials ranging from grades 10 to 20 gathered in front of the NBR Bhaban, highlighting these grievances. Their protest prompted the arrival of four vehicles from the Bangladesh Army. The military personnel assured the protesters of their cooperation and advised them to submit a written statement of their concerns. They cautioned that continued protests could exacerbate the situation.
Following this intervention, the demonstrators dispersed, though some remained unconvinced. Dhaka Taxes Zone-6 Commissioner Md Lutful Azeem urged the protesters to remain patient, leading to the eventual conclusion of the protest.
In the aftermath, leaders from both the Customs Cadre Association and the Tax Cadre Association convened separately to address their demands and plan their next steps.
