The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has emphasised the importance of a peaceful, orderly, and democratic transition in Bangladesh. In a statement issued on Monday, Guterres expressed his full solidarity with the Bangladeshi people.
The Secretary-General deplored the further loss of life that occurred during protests in Bangladesh over the weekend. He reaffirmed his steadfast support for the people of Bangladesh and stressed the need for the full respect of their human rights. Guterres underscored the necessity for a comprehensive, independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into all acts of violence.
During a press briefing, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, delivered the statement and highlighted various other issues facing Bangladesh following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Haq reiterated the Secretary-General’s call for justice and accountability in the wake of the recent turmoil.
The United Nations continues to monitor the situation closely and urges all parties involved to commit to a peaceful and democratic process, ensuring the stability and well-being of the nation.
“We continue to call for calm and restraint and to urge all parties to respect the right to peaceful assembly and expression. We urge security forces to protect those out on the streets
of Dhaka and other cities of Bangladesh,” he said. He added that accountability for human rights violations – including for those with superior and command responsibility – is crucial. The international community must make it clear that, at this pivotal time, there will be no impunity.
In reply to a question, how Bangladesh current situation will impact regional security, the spokesperson said, “We are in touch with authorities in the region and our country team is in touch with authorities in Bangladesh, and we’ll see where we go with that. But right now, the situation is moving very swiftly. We’ll have to see what happens once the dust settles.”
Asked about another question whether the Secretary-General has confidence in the military as being the caretaker in the interim period, he said, “the important thing is we want to make sure that all of the authorities, the political authorities, the military authorities, and anyone else who has a say in the current transition work together so that there will be a peaceful and democratic transition.”
