The Bangladesh Police Subordinate Employees Association has declared an indefinite strike in response to a series of violent attacks on police stations and the recent killing of police officers.
The announcement comes in the wake of significant unrest following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On Monday, as political turmoil intensified, police headquarters were set ablaze, prompting the Association to take a stand for the safety of their members.
The decision to strike was made public in a press release issued on Tuesday, detailing the escalating violence against police personnel and establishments across the country.
The press release outlined that since the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, there have been sudden and severe attacks on police forces, including the killing of officers, vandalism, and arson targeting police stations nationwide. Reports indicate that nearly 450 police stations have been attacked, resulting in numerous fatalities among police officers. The Association has described these acts as terrorist activities.
In response to the escalating threats, the Bangladesh Police Subordinate Employees Association has announced a nationwide indefinite strike starting Tuesday, August 6.
The Association emphasised the urgent need for the protection of police members, stating, “If any police officer has committed any wrongdoing, they will certainly be judged. At this time, the safety of police stations and establishments is crucial. The safety of every police member is essential. The strike will continue until the safety of every police officer’s life is ensured.”
The violence erupted following former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amidst widespread protests. She subsequently departed the country via military helicopter. The surge in attacks on police facilities has led to numerous casualties, intensifying the crisis.
In related developments, President Mohammad Shahabuddin has announced the imminent dissolution of the 12th National Parliament, signalling further political shifts as the nation grapples with the ongoing unrest.
