In a dramatic turn of events, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has announced that his mother will be stepping away from the political stage permanently.
The unexpected revelation, reported by the BBC, follows Sheikh Hasina’s resignation from her position and her departure from the country amidst escalating political unrest.
In an interview with the BBC World Service’s Newshour, Sajeeb Wazed Joy disclosed that Sheikh Hasina had been contemplating her resignation for some time. Her decision, he explained, was primarily motivated by concerns for her safety, with her family strongly advocating for her departure amid the growing turmoil.
“She was profoundly disheartened that, despite all her dedicated efforts, a minority had risen against her,” Joy lamented, underscoring the emotional toll the recent upheaval had taken on his mother.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who had served as an official adviser to the Prime Minister until his own resignation, lauded Sheikh Hasina’s achievements during her tenure. “She transformed Bangladesh. When she assumed power, the country was viewed as a failing state and a poor nation. Today, it is celebrated as one of the rising tigers of Asia. She’s deeply disappointed,” Joy reflected, highlighting the substantial economic progress Bangladesh experienced under her leadership. Joy also defended the administration’s response to the unrest, countering accusations of excessive
force against protesters. “The brutality has been severe; policemen were beaten to death-13 in just one day,” he asserted, disputing claims of disproportionate measures used against demonstrators.
