BD participants’ campaign ends in Paris Olympics

A total of five participants of Bangladesh took part in the Paris Olympics 2024. Archer Sagor Islam, swimmer Samiul Islam, swimmer Sonia Akter, shooter Robiul Islam and athlete Imranur Rahman took part in their respective events. Of them, Sagor Islam was directly qualified for the Paris Olympics. Other four participants got wild cards to take part in this Olympics.
Let us see the performance of Bangladeshi participants in this Olympics.
Archer Sagor Islam lost to Mauro Nespoli of Italy in the Recurve Men’s Individual event of 1/32 Stage of Archery Competition of Paris Olympics 2024 recently. Though the event was five sets but as Sagor was defeated in the first three sets, so Sagor lost to Mauro by 6-0 set points. As Sagor lost in the first three sets the next two sets were not needed to held.
It may be mentioned that Sagor Islam was qualified directly for the event of Paris Olympics.
On the other hand, Mauro Nespoli of Italy bagged silver medal in this event in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Mauro scored 30 (10+10+10) by his three arrows of first set, while Sagor scored 27 (8+9-10) by his three arrows in his first set.
Mauro scored 27 by his three arrows of second set, while Sagor scored 26 by his three arrows of second set.
Mauro scored 29 in his three arrows of third set, while Sagor scored 25 by his three arrows of third set.
Swimmer Samiul Islam Rafi has been eliminated from heat of the 100m freestyle event of Paris Olympics held at Paris La Defense Arena recently.
Samiul finished fifth position out of eight participants with his career best timing of 53.10 second in the second heat and overall he finished 69th place out of 79 participants in the qualification round.
American swimmer Alex Je topped the qualification round with a time of 47.57 second.
However, Samiul, who hailed from Rajbari district, found happy with the best timing in his career.
He said: “I am happy with the best timing in my career. I tried to improve my timing and I did it.”
The top 16 swimmers from this qualification round moved on to the semi-finals of the competition.
Sonia Aketer finished sixth out of eight competitors in the heat of 50metre freestyle clocking 30.52 seconds recently. She became 64th out of 79 participants. She became frustrated in her performance. She said, ” I tried my level best to do more well. But I failed. This experience will help me in my career.”
Shooter Robiul Islam failed to qualify in the next round of Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday. He became 43rd out of 49 shooters in his event of 10,metre Air Rifle event.
Robiul Islam scored 624.2 in the qualification round. A number of eight shooters will compete in the final round of this event.
Earlier, Abdullah Hel Baki finished 25th out of 50 participants in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016. It was the highest achievement for Bangladesh shooters in any Olympic Games. Baki also participated after getting wild card.
Robiul’s best score was 628 so far. But he could score only 624+.
Bangladesh’s fastest sprinter Imranur Rahman was eliminated from the preliminary heat in the 10m sprint event of the Paris Olympics after finishing sixth among eight participants on Saturday.
The 31-year-old sprinter, who ran in one of the six preliminary heats, clocked 10.73 seconds to finish his race, slower than his personal best of 10.11 seconds.
The England-based sprinter started well in the first 50 meters but eventually, he could not keep the challenge held at the purple track at Stade de France.
