A case has been filed over the fatal beating of police constable Sumon Gharami during clashes with protesters in Khulna.
Labanchara Police Station Sub-Inspector Mostafa Saklain initiated the lawsuit as a plaintiff on Friday, said the station’s chief, Momtazul Haque.
He said as many as 1,200 unidentified people have been named as suspects in the case. However, no arrest has been made.
In addition, two separate cases have been filed with Khulna Sadar and Sonadanga police over the vandalism and attacks on police during the clashes on Friday evening, Haque said.
Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Mozammel Haque said constable Sumon died from the beating of protesters in Khulna city’s Mohammad Nagar area on Friday evening.
The 33-year-old deceased was a native of Kachua Upazila in Bagerhat. He had been living with his family in Khulna city’s Boyra area.
Sumon was severely beaten by the protesters during the clash. He was rushed to Khulna City Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, Police Commissioner Mozammel said.
Another 30 policemen were injured during the clash. The condition of two or three officers among them is critical. The protesters also set fire to a police car during the clash.
