BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced on Thursday that the party will issue a reaction regarding the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami after it has had an internal discussion on the matter.
Fakhrul made this statement in response to inquiries from journalists about the party’s position on the issue.
In a separate statement, Fakhrul urged the government to focus on identifying wrongdoers within its own ranks rather than seeking out a so-called “third power.”
He accused the government and certain pro-ruling party officials in law enforcement agencies of deliberately spreading misinformation about the recent student protests, labelling these efforts as superficial attempts to obscure the truth. Fakhrul called on the administration and law enforcement agencies to cease their suppression and oppression of students, urging them to reject unjust and illegal orders from the government.
He warned that escalating repression would only galvanise stronger mass resistance. The BNP leader criticised the government’s strategy of pitting law enforcement and the administration against students, describing it as a troubling sign for the nation.
He stated, “The head of government, along with ministers and some Awami-minded members of law enforcement agencies, are continuously resorting to falsehoods, alleging that a so-called ‘third power’ was responsible for the shootings and massacres.
However, it is evident to the public and the international community that the protesting students and general citizens were unarmed.”
Fakhrul continued, “Firearms were visible in the hands of law enforcement personnel and members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League. Despite this, the government persists in its deceitful narrative to obscure the truth.”
