Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has denounced the assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump at an election rally at Butler in Pennsylvania, US on Saturday as unfortunate.

“It is really regrettable. He is a presidential candidate. We definitely condemn it as such an attack was carried out on him,” she said replying to a question at a press conference.

The press conference was arranged at her official residence Ganabhaban to raise the outcomes of her recent visit to China.

Noting that America always feels proud of their democracy, she questioned how such an incident occurred in a place like the USA. Trump, a presidential aspirant and former president, has narrowly survived the attack.

“It is our question as to why such an incident took place in a civilized country like the USA which is the pioneer of democracy,” wondered Hasina.

She noted that the Republican Party did not blame the government for the attack and President Joe Biden also condemned the attack.

“If such an incident took place in Bangladesh, the government would have been blamed,” she said.

Trump narrowly survived after bullet slightly cut his ear spilling blood on his face. Gun shots rang out during a campaign rally on Saturday in Pennsylvania and he was rushed off stage. The attacker and a rally attendee were killed.

Meanwhile, World leaders reacted with shock to the wounding of Donald Trump in an assassination attempt against the former US president at an election rally.

Presidents and prime ministers globally spoke out against political violence and expressed their support for those affected by the shooting on Saturday, which killed one bystander and left two other spectators critically wounded.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was “deeply shocked” by the attack.

“Political violence has no place in a democracy,” she said.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the shooting “despicable” and said “such acts of violence threaten democracy.”
