A three-day long 3rd International Symposium on ‘Music and Allied Arts of Greater South Asia’ has begun today July 11, 2024 at the auditorium of Bangladesh Asiatic Society. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal inaugurated the symposium as chief guest.
The Department of Dance of DU has organized this event with the theme of `The Climate Crisis and its Impact on the Arts’.
Dean of DU Faculty of Arts Prof. Dr. Abdul Bashir presided over the inaugural session while Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of DU Prof Dr. Sitesh Chandra Bachar, Prof. Dr. Svanibor Pettan of Ljubljana University of Slovenia, Prof. Dr. K. D. Lasanthi Manaranjanie of the University of Visual Arts and Design Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and Prof. Dr. Richard Kent Wolf of Harvard University, USA addressed it as special guests. Professor Emeritus of DU English Department Dr. Syed Manzoorul Islam delivered the key-note speech.
Chairperson of DU Dance Department Monira Parveen delivered welcome speech while Associate Professor Dr. Sayeem Rana gave vote of thanks.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal urged the cultural activists of the world to play an effective role in creating awareness on climate change and global warming among the people. Terming arts and culture as strong weapons to prevent misdeads he said the artists have to raise strong voices against carbon emission through their cultural activities. He said, the developed countries of the world are mainly responsible for carbon emission.
Global temperature is rapidly increasing due to carbon emission. South Asian countries especially Bangladesh are worst victims and badly affected by these burning issues. This symposium will help create awareness among the people in this regard, he hoped.
Sixty three delegates and artists from ten countries around the world are participating at this symposium.
