8 years of militant attack: Nightmare still haunts Sholakia people

The people of Kishoreganj could not forget the brutal militant attack that shocked the country eight years ago. Even in this long time, the trial process of that case has not ended. Memories of that horrific event still haunt the mind of the people of nearby houses, said a resident of Sholakia area describing the horrible memories of that day.
People of Kishoreganj have demanded justice against the accused. Out of 101 witnesses, 60 have been testified so far.
Gaurangnath Bhowmik, husband of Jharna Rani Bhowmik, who was killed in the militant attack that day, could not attend the murder trial. He died in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on June 18, according to his cousin Madhav Gobind Das, a brave freedom fighter. Now their two sons Vasudev Bhowmik and Shubadev Bhowmik are waiting to see the trial of their mother’s murder.
At that time, Shubhdev Bhowmik was a student of the sixth standard. He is currently studying in his first year at Patuakhali University of Science and Technology. And the son of the previous family, Vasudev Bhowmik, has been given a job in a private bank on the initiative of the government. They said the father died while waiting to see the trial. Now they are waiting to see the tragic death trial of the mother.
The Public Prosecutor (PP) of the tribunal, Abu Naser Farooq sanju Advocate that some of the accused have cases in different districts of the country including Gulshan’s Holy Artisan case. Because of this, they could not always appear before the Anti-Terrorism Tribunal of Kishoreganj on the scheduled date. Because of this, the taking of evidence is delayed. However, the type of evidence that is available, the maximum sentence will be given to the militants.
He said that the next date of taking the testimony is scheduled on July 31.
On July 7, 2016, 15 minutes before Eid-ul-Fitr congregation at 9:01 am, militants attacked the police check post in front of Azimuddin High School near Sholakia Eidgah ground in Kishoreganj. Two Cops named Ansarul Haque and Zahirul Haque were hacked to death with chapati and an axe. Later the militants clashed with the police. At that time housewife Jharna Rani Bhowmik was shot and died. A militant named Abir Rahman (20) of Comilla’s Debidwar area was killed in the gunfight that day. Shafiul Islam (19) of Ghoraghat area of Dinajpur and Zahidul Haq Tanim (25) of Tarapasha area of Kishorganj town were arrested in the state of gunshot wounds.
Three days after the incident, Pakundia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md. Samchuddin filed a case as a plaintiff.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Kalam Azad, SP Mohammad Rasel Sheikh, Zila Parishad chairman Advocate Zillur Rahman, Civil Surgeon Dr. Saiful Islam, Promoted SP Mustaque Sarker, SP(DSB) Noor -e -Alam, Mayor Pervez Miah, ADC (General) Rubel Mahamud, District Awami League General Secretary Adv. MA Afzol, Senior journalist Saiful Haque Mollah Dulu, and Mohila Parishad in Kishoreganj president Adv. Maya Bhowmick and CAB district president Alam Sarowar Tito have paid homage to the memory of victims with placing flowers at Azimuddin High School intersection in the town on Sunday.
Police Super (SP) of Kishoreganj Mohammad Rasel Sheikh PMM (Bar), BPM told the New Nation that, police submitted a chargesheet against 24 people in the court on August 11, 2018.
Among them, 19 people including Shafiul Islam, who directly participated in the Sholakia attack, died in the operation of law and order forces in various places. Currently, five people are included in the chargesheet. The accused is incarcerated in different jails of the country, SP Rashel Sheikh added.
